Mac Preferences Files

We don't usually field hardware or OS problems. But this Mac owner needed some quick help getting back up and running...

Michael Jankowski in Illinois using Mac OS 9.2 and Photoshop 7.0 writes

My system crashed and I reinstalled OS 9.2. I then moved files from my OLD SYSTEM FOLDER (which I believe I needed because I didn't want to reinstall all of my software) to my NEW SYSTEM FOLDER. PROBLEM: When I launch my Photoshop native files from their icons, then now open up as PICT files; however, when I launch them from within PS, they are fine. Logic tells me that my coping files from my OLD to NEW system folder created this problem.
You may suggest that I reinstall OS 9.2, but I really don't want to reinstall all of my applications. Is there, perhaps, a quick fix (such as removing certain files from my system folder, etc.) to problem-solve? Thanks

Rebuild the desktop

Reboot holding in the Command and Option keys until the "Do you want to rebuild... " option dialog clears.

This should solve the problem.

Most people move the contents of the Preferences folder, but forget the "Application Support" folder. Make sure you moved all of the Adobe files over into the new system folder -- including "Application Support" folder.

There will be several other files belonging to Adobe in the root system folder as well, including the registrations database. But I guess you got those, since it works. :-)

Rebuilding the desktop should do it.
