Burned Holes in Photoshop

RK, in Indiana, USA, using OS X, Photoshop 7

No problem, RK... go to:
Photoshop/Seminars/burned/

It's a bit old, written for Photoshop version 3.5, however
it still works and the principle is the same.

For the drop shadow, if you don't have Alien Skin, then
just use the "shadow" layer style, and mortise it back
into the opening of the "hole"

is there any way to create the same "burned" effect, but on the edges of the image? almost like feathering, but a burned look. help please!
