Heart Shaped Photo

This reader needs to know how to put a photo into a heart...

Susan from riverside, ca, using photoshop cs with xp pro, writes in with:

[Quote:] I'm working on a photo that I need to make heart shaped. I have the heart and working on the idea of sandwiching it onto the photo, inverting the selection and hitting delete to create the shape -- but it's not working. Other ideas?

Reply:

1) Start with the Heart Shape, and make it a selection.
While the selection is active, move to the image you wish to put into the heart,
* Select All
* Copy
* return to your active Heart selection
* use Edit > Paste Into

2) Use the 'Move' tool (V) and drag the Heart Shape into the work file.
(it should appear in a new layer above the photo)
* Move it around until it's positioned correctly
* Make it an active selection (Right click/Ctrl Click on the layer)
* Choose: Select > Invert Selection (To select the background)
* Hide the layer (Click the 'eye' icon)
* Select the Photo layer
* Select the 'Move' tool (V) and hit DELETE

3) If the above seems too destructive, then
* Use the 'Move' tool (V) and drag the Heart Shape into the work file.
(it should appear in a new layer above the photo)
* Move it around until it's positioned correctly
* Make it an active selection (Right click/Ctrl Click on the layer)
* Choose: Select > Invert Selection (To select the background)
* Hit Option/Delete (Alt/Delete) to fill the selection with the current foreground color
(If you wanted "White" then the foreground color needed to be white.)
* Choose : Select > Invert Selection (Selecting the center of the heart)
* Use the 'Move' tool (V) and hit DELETE to clear the heart shape.
You should now see the photo through the heart-shaped hole you just created.

There are many other ways to do this but these are the easiest and most direct.

i WOULD LIKE THIS PICTURE TO BE A HEARTS:)

an alternate way...

make a new document.
make a new layer with the photo on it.
make a new layer and make a heart shape. reduce the opacity of this layer to 50% so you can see the photo underneath. position the heart over the photo in the desired way. You can resize the heart or photo or tilt things using transform to make sure nothing you want to keep gets cut off.
when you are happy with it, go to the layer with the heart. select the background with the wand tool, so you have a selection with a heart shaped hole in it.
now go to the layer with the photo and hit delete. your photo has now been cropped into a heart shape.
you can now delete the layer with the heart.

im still a beginner at this and im trying desparately to figure this out. i read over ur intsuctions countless times and i've tried it over and over again and it hasn't come out right. im left with a blank canvas at the end of it. if you could write back with any suggestions that would be very helpful. thank you.
