What did I do?
ME from australia, using Photoshop 6 with xp Windows, writes in with:

Also remember: you probably wouldn't have to ask this question if you picked up any of these excellent training aids.

Chances are, you probably painted on or pasted into the transparency mask on the layer. If you click on the right box, you can continue painting onto the mask. The mask defines which areas the adjustment layer applies to (white) and which areas of the adjustment layer are transparent (black) and do not affect the underlying image.
I also find transparency masks useful on normal layers, as it's a "non-destructive" way to cut and composite, as opposed to using the eraser or select-and-delete to remove areas. If you happen to cut off too much with a transparency mask, just paint white and it's back.
